Ashyan's
Lu Ruo Fan

A.K.A Taiwanese pork belly rice!

Home: Welcome

What is Lu Ruo Fan?

Great question!

One of Taiwan's most iconic foods. A super traditional staple found all over Taiwan, their soul food if you will. Lu rou fan literally translates to stewed meat rice. You can find LRF in street food type stalls and in high-end restaurants like Din Tai Fung!

Simply put: Traditionally the main concept is stewed minced pork over rice. The ratio being 20% pork, 40% sauce 40% rice.

Non simply put: our LRF is pork belly braised & stewed with various spices, very rich in aroma, taste and flavor. Then poured over steamed white rice. Other than the incredibly soft & rich texture of the porkbelly (using the golden ratio of 70% fat and 30% meat) the magic is the rice fully smotherd in juicy sauce. To balance it out ours is served with sliced boiled egg, scallions, and pickled veggie.

Vegan LRF?!?!

I've been testing some recipes out in the kitchen! I'll keep you posted when there's a winner and a vegan LRF roll out!

This is a tricky one for me because when I started Ashyan's my intent was to keep the dish as close to the original LRF as I had in Taiwan. But I've been getting so so so many requests for a vegan/vegetarian version. Plus, I myself usually lean towards a meatless diet so I decided to venture to try to find a delicious vegan recipe!

About

So how did Ashyan's Lu Ruo Fan come about?

This started out because I was craving Lu Ruo Fan. But for YEARS. I go back to Taiwan every year and every time I get back to SF I miss this delicious Taiwanese soul food. Since 2014 I’ve noticed a lack of Taiwanese restaurants in SF. There are only 2 or 3 and I tried their Lu Ruo Fan and it was never the same as what I remembered eating in Taipei. I'd been saying for years that I would learn to make it myself and, thanks to Shelter In Place times I finally did!

I've always been so in love with food and what it represents and the way it connects people & cultures. So when I was laid off from my job it sparked a series of ideas & thoughts that landed me with the notion to launch a soft, super simple, version of Ashyan's, the Lu Ruo Fan edition! This is the perfect way to combine my love of food, love of feeding people, while solving the lack of Lu Ruo Fan in SF, and also sharing and introducing this Taiwanese cultural staple & specialty to those who haven't tried it before.

Thanks for reading my story, look forward to feeding you!
